Project outline and UI Design for an AJAX-powered Image Gallery Module

Blog
created on Mon, 2008-05-26 16:25

After designing and theming with Drupal for almost a year and a half, I realize now that if there is one thing that is not easy with Drupal, it's creating Image Galleries.

I now know many ways to create image galleries (image, image_gallery, imagefield, views, etc. etc. etc.), but none of them feels to me like the ideal solution. The way I see it, Drupal does not have a "proper" image gallery module. And more important, none of them are user-friendly enough.

I've been thinking about how we could use the node system to create image galleries, where images could be re-used, categorized, organized... and how to make all this easier for the end user. After sharing these ideas with the Raincity folks, I came up with this outline for a new, flexible Drupal-native image gallery system.

Reverse Bounty: backport configurable watchdog logging to Drupal 5

Blog
created on Thu, 2007-04-05 15:29It's been a while since I helped organize a reverse bounty. On the auction block is some great functionality that is likely going to make it's way into Drupal 6, but is super useful for:
  • high traffic sites
  • ISPs / mass hosting
  • enterprise deployments
  • people that like having their website instant message them
Today, the watchdog table logs regular system events (e.g. users logging in, creating new accounts, or posting content) as well as error conditions and other explanatory notes. On a high traffic site, the watchdog table must be pruned on a regular basis so that the database table doesn't grow wildly out of control. There is also no way to archive this information.

Enter Khalid's (2bits.com) patch for Drupal 6: instead of only logging to the database, the patch will enable the destination of logging to be configurable. Raw text file, syslog, and email logging are all modules that have been implemented as proof of concept using this new system.

But seeing this, many of us immediately wanted this functionality for Drupal 5. Much like Bryght's system included free tagging of categories and configurable RSS feed support in our hosted 4.6 version, functions in future versions of Drupal can be backported. That's what this reverse bounty is for – we've spoken with Khalid, and he's willing to make this functionality available via a patch to Drupal 5, including the porting of the support modules such as syslog and email notification. How can you help? Well, we're gathering funds using ChipIn -- click on the Flash widget below to contribute. If you really want to help promote, grab the ChipIn widget and post it on your own blog or website.

Want web-based integration of mailing lists? Fund the og2list reverse bounty

Blog
created on Fri, 2006-04-21 15:40

Like the title says, Zack Rosen of CivicSpace is trying to rally support for the og2list module. Here are some quotes from the reverse bounty post on Drupal.org:

Og2list is an add-on module for Organic Goups. It will provide full blown mailinglist support for groups created within a Drupal website. You can see a demonstration of early og2list functionality in this screencast. We hope to add og2list support to groups.drupal.org when development work is complete.

Why do you want to help fund this add-on module? Well, that's the beauty of open source. Fund it once, and it becomes available for everyone. Zack goes on to explain why this type of functionality is important.

We think og2list will be a very important contribution of critical functionality to the Drupal project. While we are living in the age of "Web 2.0" web-application innovation, most collaboration that takes part in online communities is still facilitated through mailinglists. Properly integrating mailinglist functionality inside a Drupal platform will allow communities to leverage the best of both worlds; the timeliness and convience of email based collaboration combined with powerful features only avaliable through the Drupal platform.
