Geekfests!

Summer's winding down which means less camping camping, and more indoor camping, on the agenda.

Next up to add to your geek fest calendar are two free-form, inter-disciplinary meetups in Vancouver:

MobileCampVancouver2 at WorkSpace on Saturday, Sept.6th.

BarCampVancouver2008 at locations Granville Island on Saturday/Sunday, Sept. 27th-28th.

Both are participatory events with presentations selected by vox populi at the beginning of the session. Check out the the Rules of Bar Camp to learn what to expect.

MobileCamp Vancouver 2

Alas, MCV2 runs concurrently with Drupal Camp Victoria but there are enough enthusiasts around to make both events a success. MCV2 is sponsored by Mobile Muse - an applied research and developmet project funded by the Canadian government to conduct projects in the emerging mobile space.

Mobile Camp vancouver2

Blurb:

MobileCampVancouver is bringing together iPhone junkies, Crackberry addicts, couch surfers, coffee shop hackers, vagabonds and mobile nomads to share the current state and their visions for the future direction of mobility.

created on Mon, 2006-08-28 10:47 Thanks to all sponsors and organizers, BarCampVan worked. And it was fun. We laughed, we cried, it was better than Cats.

Check out the many pics.

The Boys

There's talk of throwing together a PhotoCamp or DemoCamp in the near future, so keep your eyes peeled at a blog near you!

Photography The Science

Photo: Formula Photographic

Matthew Trentacoste, Kris Krug and Warwick Patterson held a session at BarCampVancouver on anything and everything photographic that we, the session go-ers, wanted to talk about, learn, gain, explore.

Matt showed us some pretty spectacular effects along with a few great resources to scope out and play with:
Hand-Held Plenoptic Camera
Refocusing From Light Fields
Flash and No-Flash Image Pairs
Microsoft Photosynth on YouTube

Raincity's Aaron Wheeler Gives Props To The Postcard

How do you tap into your creative self? When Aaron is not programming in Ruby, he's making postcards.

What Are The Benefits?

  • Impress your in-laws
  • To GET postcards (although this never really happens)
  • To feel good about yourself :)

A Few Tips & Ideas:

  • Write anonymous postcards - it's fun and makes you feel good
  • Narcissistic postcards - Instead of "Missing You Honey", try "All About Me" as your cover tagline.
  • Send personalized Christmas postcards
  • Doctor old family photos with your own face and stick it on a postcard
  • Use rubber cement

Sleepless in Vancouver

...and so it goes for the 24-hour stint we call BarCamp.

We are half way through our Saturday at BarCampVancouver. There were some wise folks who elected to hit their homes and the comfort of their own bed after the opening BBQ, and there were of course the brave souls who camped out at WorkSpace, staying true to the traditional sense of BarCamp.
